Our inspiration for this project is Frank Stella, who is a minimalistic artist most known for his use of geometric patterns for creating his sculptures and paintings. I was inspired by one of his paintings, “Concentric Squares” (1936) that features squares in different sizes positioned in a way it almost draws you into the painting. I got a sense of “growth” as the squares grow bigger in size and although the artwork itself is 2-dimensional, we thought it would be interesting if we made a garment that lays flat to begin with but turns 3-dimensional as the dancer starts performing with it.
